SBC Winners
At this year’s Awards on Thursday 11th June, winners were praised for pushing the mainstream boundaries of CSR and integrating it into their core business practice despite current economic challenges.
The Scottish
Business in the Community Awards for Excellence are the most prestigious in the
UK for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
At this year’s
Awards on Thursday 11th June, winners were praised for pushing the mainstream
boundaries of CSR and integrating it into their core business practice despite
current economic challenges. Categories range from the promotion of workplace
health to working with schools to boost skills and
employability.
Highest scorers
are awarded the “Big Tick” which is used by hundreds of businesses to compete
for customers, contracts and staff. CHA were successful in achieving a Big Tick
Award in the category “Opportunities is Communities” in the Active Communities
Section.
Small Company of
the Year also went to Cunninghame Housing Association, one of the leading social
enterprises in Ayrshire. Judges praised their model of corporate social
responsibility and said other sectors could learn lessons from their example:
“if all organisations were like this Scotland would be a better
place”.
So what does
Corporate Social Responsibility mean? Frank Sweeney, Chief Executive of
Cunninghame, explained:
“This is one of
the most frequently asked questions in the business world – and probably for all
those individuals and organisations dealing with Corporate Social Responsibility
issues.
Different
organisations have framed different definitions. From Cunninghame Housing
Association’s perspective, Corporate Social Responsibility is about how the
organisation manages its business processes to produce an overall positive
impact on its employees, its tenants, its partners and other stakeholders and
the communities within which it operates.”
SBC’s new Chief
Executive, Jane Wood said, “I am delighted to congratulate the winners of the
Awards for Excellence 2009. I am particularly impressed, during this economic
climate, with how businesses are demonstrating real bottom line business
benefits from their responsible practices and partnerships. The businesses and
people in them represent a challenge to us all on how to improve our economy,
society and environment.”
CHA’s Chairman,
Scott Maclaren, said: “to be chosen as the small company of the Year for SBIC is
a fantastic achievement for everyone associated with Cunninghame and will, I am
sure, inspire us further in all that we do as a leading edge social
enterprise”.
