MAKE YOUR RENT A PRIORITY

We understand there may be a time when you have difficulty paying rent. If your account goes into rent arrears, we will contact you at the earliest opportunity. This is to help you to prevent the arrears escalating which could leave you with unmanageable debt.

Your Housing Officer is here to help. They can help you find an affordable repayment arrangement for your ongoing rent and any arrears. Your Housing Officer can also help with budgeting and benefits advice. If you aren’t sure why you have arrears on your account we can provide you with a rent statement.

Tenants who don’t pay and don’t engage with us will have their case escalated. This could include serving a Notice of Proceedings and raising court action against their tenancy. If court action is required, a Sheriff may award court costs (which could be around £350) which will need to be paid along with the rent arrears. A Sheriff may also grant an order to evict someone from their home. We want to avoid any formal action and can support tenants to stay in their home if they engage with us.

If a you leave your home, you will be required to be pay any outstanding rent and other charges, such as repairs and court costs. We will contact you and support you to make an affordable repayment arrangement. If you do not engage with us you will be referred to a debt collection agency, which may affect your credit rating.

Housing applicants with current or former tenant arrears can have their application suspended until an agreement has been put in place and payments have been received for at least three months.
