Energy Bills Rising in Scotland from July 2026

Households across Scotland are facing another increase in energy costs this summer after Ofgem confirmed a 13% rise in the energy price cap from 1 July 2026.

For a typical dual-fuel household, annual energy costs are expected to increase from £1,641 to £1,862 — an extra £221 per year, or around £18 more each month.

While summer usually brings lower energy use, many households are already under pressure from rising living costs and existing energy debt. Understanding what is changing now can help you prepare for the months ahead.

Why Are Energy Bills Increasing?

The biggest factor behind the increase is a sharp rise in global wholesale gas prices.

Recent disruption to international oil and gas routes linked to conflict in the Middle East has increased supply pressures and pushed costs higher across energy markets. Wholesale gas prices have risen significantly in recent months, and these changes are now feeding through to household bills.

Who Will Be Affected?

Around 60% of households currently on standard variable tariffs are expected to feel the impact from July.

Households already on fixed tariffs are unlikely to see immediate changes until their current agreement ends.

Remember: the energy price cap does not limit your total bill — it limits the amount suppliers can charge per unit of energy and standing charges. Your final costs still depend on how much energy you use.

What Can You Do Now?

Review Fixed Tariff Options:  Check with your supplier to see if fixed tariff options are available. Some fixed deals may sit below the July price cap and could provide more certainty if prices continue to rise later in the year.

Get Ahead of Energy Debt: Many households are already carrying energy debt before this latest increase takes effect. If you are worried about keeping up with bills, reaching out early can open up more support options.

Seek Advice & Local Support: If you are unsure what support is available, advice services can help with: energy debt support, supplier issues, budgeting guidance, grant applications, payment support options.

Looking Ahead to Winter: Many energy experts expect prices to remain high or potentially increase again when the next price cap review takes place in October. That means households may see little relief as colder weather approaches, making early planning more important than ever.
