Heating Oil Prices Surge: What It Means for Households

Heating oil prices have risen sharply in recent weeks, leaving many households worried about the cost of keeping their homes warm. Across the UK, the increase has been driven by global supply chain pressures and ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which have significantly impacted kerosene imports and wholesale heating oil prices.

For many rural households across Scotland, especially those relying on oil heating systems, these rising costs are creating additional financial pressure.

Current Heating Oil Prices

Heating oil prices are currently averaging between 88p and 91p per litre for bulk deliveries of 500 to 1,000 litres (excluding VAT).

Prices surged by more than 10p per litre during late Q1 as geopolitical tensions disrupted global supply routes and reduced the availability of middle-distillate fuels such as kerosene and aviation fuel.

Why Are Heating Oil Prices Rising?

Middle East Conflict: Oil-producing regions, particularly Iran, have increased shipping costs and disrupted international fuel supply chains.

Supply Pressures: Heating oil is a kerosene-based product and Europe’s reliance on imported jet fuel has caused kerosene prices to rise faster than crude oil itself.

Operational Costs: Refineries are facing rising costs, many of which are now being passed directly onto consumers.

Tips to Help Manage Heating Oil Costs

Savings Clubs: Some local fuel suppliers offer budgeting schemes or savings clubs that let you to spread costs over the year instead of facing one large payment.
